Former poet laureate to read at CSULB

Billy Collins, a former U.S Poet Laureate and best-selling author, will be reading some of his works in the Carpenter Performing arts Center on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Collins has fans all over the world and is best known for being able to capture the subjects of everyday life.

He is part of the Wit and Wisdom Series in the Carpenter Center. According to Michael Field, director of marketing, the series has “content to make you laugh and to make you think a little about life.”

Collins has ties to two other “Wit and Wisdom” speakers: He has appeared on Garrison Keillor’s show “A Prairie Home Companion” on National Public Radio and he was the first recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for Humor.

Field also said that Collins was a “perfect fit” for the series. He described Collins’ work as “very accessible, poignant and funny at the same time.”

Collins has won many awards including fellowships from the New York Foundation of the Arts, the National Endowment for the arts and the Guggenheim Foundation.

Tickets are available at the Carpenter Center or at carpenterarts.org. According to the ticket office, they have sold about two-thirds of the tickets, meaning there are about 400 left.

As long as they are available, tickets can be purchased until an hour before the event in the ticket office.

Regular tickets are $35 and students, seniors, alumni, faculty and staff can attend for $30.
