Incoming students settle into dorms

Editors note: This article corrects a previous article which incorrectly identified the organization that mandated new Cal State Long Beach students live in university dorms. This mandate was implemented as university policy by CSULB

The Cal State Long Beach dorms were buzzing with an estimated 2,500 incoming students, along with their parents, Greeks and many more this past Saturday during the annual dormitory move-ins.

“I’m excited [about living in the dorms],” freshman mechanical engineering major Garret Koneval said. “I’ve never met my roommate, but we talked on Facebook.”

Fraternities and sororities, along with Associated Students Inc., and CSULB sports team members, all set up tents to meet and greet the school’s new dormers. The tents provided students with free waters and music to help ease their nerves. A large portion of the Greek community also helped students move their items into their dorms throughout the day.

“The best part is seeing their excitement,” said Josh Wolfe, junior communications major and member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. “They want to know about everything that goes on campus.”

However, dorm move-in day isn’t only about networking with students and helping them settle into their new living situations. It’s also a way to further unite our campus and help our incoming students feel at home, sophomore psychology major Craig Lloyd said.

“We greet the students and their parents to help them feel welcome and so their parents leave them knowing their in good hands,” Lloyd said.

Residential advisers checked students into his or her given dorm room, greeting students’ parents and family members as well.

President F. Alexander also made an appearance later that Saturday morning to help the new students move in.

Two years ago, CSULB made it mandatory for new students to live in the dorms. Most of the dormers were freshmen.

Cal State Long Beach holds dorm move-ins each year on the Saturday before the fall semester begins. Move-ins began at 8:30 am and run until about four that evening.
