ASI: Smorgasport turnout exceeds expectations

Cal State Long Beach students experienced a night of interactive games, radio dance parties and live performances at Smorgasport, the concluding event in celebration of last week’s Week of Welcome.

Students showed up well before 8 p.m. on Sept. 9 to try to get their hands on a Smorgasport T-shirt and free pizza. Only the first 200 students received a T-shirt. Associated Students Inc. expected more than 3,000 people to attend the event.

The turnout exceeded expectations, as guests waited in a line that wrapped around Brotman Hall.

“I finally have some free time and it is my last year here,” said Angelica Mondragon, senior health science and sociology major. “I want to make sure I don’t miss out on the festivities.”

Students of all class standings showed up at Smorgasport to experience the fun, and network with people in their majors and fields. Aside from inflatable relay races and wax hand-making booths, Smorgasport featured a large number of academic organizations to offer a peek into their majors and future careers.

“My organization helps students learn more about their majors, and how we can help them network with professionals in the field,” said Alexis Brooks, a senior nutrition and dietetics major and member of the Association of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The academic organizations were joined by Greek groups and club athletes, among others. Dell, Wells Fargo, 97.1 Amp Radio, Cha for Tea, FedEx and other businesses were also available hosting photo booths, free samples and prizes.

Though every game, booth and table had a long line, the exhibits that attracted the most people were the foam jousting, electric bull riding and the rock-climbing exhibit.

The bowling and billiards also received a lot of attention from Smorgasport-goers. In addition, the game center lounge at the University Student Union became the venue for a break dance competition held by students.

97.1 Amp Radio hosted a dance party featuring strolling fraternities and sororities that opened the floor for everyone to enjoy the music and cut loose. Photo booths were also open to people who went back for second, third and fourth photo shoots.
