CSULB alumna is Rhodes Scholar

Cal State Long Beach alumna Stephanie Bryson, in addition to about 80 other students worldwide, has been chosen to be a Rhodes Scholar to study at Oxford University.

The Rhodes Scholarship was set up in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes. Bryson was selected out of more than 830 applicants to receive the award.

According to the Rhodes Scholars website, applicants are selected “not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead.”

Past recipients of this scholarship include Bill Clinton, New York Times columnist Nick Kristof and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

Bryson graduated from CSULB as valedictorian in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in international studies and a minor in political science.

While completing her undergraduate studies at Cal State Long Beach, Bryson was named Outstanding International Studies Student in April 2011.

She won the Outstanding Delegate Award for the Geneva International Model UN in April 2009. Bryson also received several scholarships to study in Germany.

Bryson is currently pursuing a master’s in German and European Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

The Rhodes Scholars provides full financial support for scholars to pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Rhodes Scholars will begin their studies at Oxford University in October 2012. Bryson will pursue a master’s of philosophy in politics.
