Annette Lujan remembered as ‘always smiling,’ ‘enthusiastic’

Editor’s note: This article corrects information regarding Annette Lujan’s master’s degree. She was awarded the degree before her death.

Annette Lujan, a single mom and an employee of the Foundation building’s Office of University Grants and Research at Cal State Long Beach for nine years, died in an elevator accident on Dec. 7, 2011. She was 48.

Lujan lived in Huntington Beach for 10 years. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle LeClair, her son and her grandson.

“They were constantly going to the beach,” neighbor Teri Moore said about Lujan and her grandson.

Lujan was a member of the Cal State Employees Union.

“She was a high achiever,” said Peggy O’Neil-Rosales, CSU union Chapter 315 president and friend of Lujan. “She’s really a special person.”

According to O’Neil-Rosales, Lujan was awarded a master’s degree before the accident. She also said Lujan often worked full-time while going to school.

“She was a great gal,” Moore said. “She lived a very full life and it’s a very great loss.”

O’Neil-Rosales said that many people on campus couldn’t get their grants without Lujan. She also said that Lujan was dedicated to fighting for rights and that she was always smiling and enthusiastic.

A memorial service was held in honor of Lujan on Dec. 16, 2011 at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden.
