Legalization of marijuana to be an issue again

Five groups are trying to put another initiative to legalize marijuana on the ballot for 2012.

In 2010, Proposition 19 made the possibility of legalization seem very real.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Proposition 19 received support from 46 percent of the voters. When the measure failed to pass, backers said they would push for another legalization bid in 2012, according to ABC News.

Now, the groups behind the initiative are working separately, but they have not been able to get much funding.

Since two years ago, when the legalization of marijuana was on the ballot, some students have changed their opinions.

“I would say I’m more for legalization than I was before,” junior recreation and leisure major Steven Hickey said. “Just because two years ago I wasn’t really smoking at all, and I was against weed in general.”

Junior social work major Victor Perey said he is still conflicted on the issue.

“You don’t really want to see a bunch of kids running around and getting high,” Perey said.

Sophomore physics major Julia Meiner said she thinks there are bigger issues at hand.

She said she is frustrated that people are putting so much emphasis on the issue.

Freshman pre-business marketing major Ashli Lorinlopp disagrees.

“If enough people want it, I don’t see why not,” Lorinlopp said.
