Week of Welcome wows thousands

Cal State Long Beach’s annual Student Organization Fair returned Wednesday with a roar.

The fair, as part of CSULB’s “Week of Welcome,” saw a wide variety of organizations, including break dancing, the sailing club, the Greeks, religious clubs and major study-related clubs.

Some of the clubs were new while others were old friends.
A new club featured at the fair was a human trafficking awareness club called “Not for Sale.”

Jill Tarleton, a senior civil engineering major, said she created the club because of her passion for the issue. She handed out informative bookmarks to students at the fair, which showed the number of people trafficked in the U.S. each year.

“[Sex trafficking is] all over the world,” Tarleton said. “It’s really big in Southeast Asia.”

The Student Organization Fair also saw the return of the Gaming Club, which was reinstated by sophomore psychology major Rocky Nicholson and sophomore history major Noura Kaddoura this year.

“The Gaming Club will focus primarily on [Magic: The Gathering],” Nicholson said.

Nicholson said he wants to hold “Magic” tournaments for the club. Other than playing the game, the club will also talk about card game strategies, deck types and new events.

The Beach Bellies club returned this year with both its belly dance club and team. Ambar Villamar, a senior health science major, said Beach Bellies has about 30 members.

The club portion is instructional and teaches different combinations of belly dancing, including cabaret and tribal.

Week of Welcome will continue with the Student Organization Fair today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will end with Smorgasport on Friday night at 8 p.m.
