Daily 49er takes home six awards

The Daily 49er has won six awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, the California College Media Association and the California Newspaper Publishers Association.

Kasia Hall, editor in chief of the Daily 49er, said the awards the newspaper received reflect the hard work of the staff.

“I’ve been at the paper for three years, and I’ve never seen people work as hard as they do now,” Hall said. “They are talented and hard working.”

Previous Sports Photo Editor Steven Carcano received three awards for the photo he took of former Long Beach State point guard Casper Ware celebrating the 49ers’ Big West tournament championship.

Carcano won first place in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Region 11 awards and third place for best sports photo at the California College Media Association awards. He also placed for an award from the California Newspaper Publishers Association for best sports photo, though he will not learn which place he received until this weekend.

As a first place winner for Region 11 in the SPJ awards, Carcano’s photo is will be submitted to the national SPJ competition.

Previous Cartoons Editor Robbie Eich also placed first at the SPJ Region 11 awards for cartoons, which will be submitted to the national competition along with Carcano’s work.

Photo Editor Shilah Montiel placed first for best feature photo in the CCMA awards, and Radio Production Assistant James Delahoussaye won first place for best podcast.

Delahoussaye said he was surprised by the award, especially because it was the first podcast he completed for the Daily 49er.

“I knew it was a competent piece, but I didn’t think it was award-winning,” Delahoussaye said. “I was really excited because public radio is what I want to do.”

Delahoussaye said he gives Radio Producer Marie Cathcart much credit because he would not have had the opportunity without her.

Barbara Kingsley-Wilson, a journalism professor and content adviser for the Daily 49er, said she is happy about the awards.

“It shows the reflection and hard work from the people in this newsroom,” Kingsley-Wilson said. “They’re starting to get strong awards and will get more in the future.”
