Letters to the Editor-Notes from students urge Schwarzenegger to fund higher education

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I was dropped, kicked and cancelled out of every class in my major I was enrolled in this semester. Where is California education? I should have graduated [by] now. I am up to two years behind as a direct result of cuts to higher education. There will be no future work force or tax base without education.

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
Because of budget cuts and the financial crisis, my family is struggling to send me and my sister to college. Please don’t take away my chance for a better future. By increasing class sizes and taking away funding, you are short-changing the next generation. Please give us a chance.

— Jenna Kurtz

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
Education should always remain the first priority in the state’s fiscal concerns. Funding education to the highest degree empowers the people of the state to be more successful, more productive and, most of all, good citizens. As a result of the recent budget cuts, students are required to pay more while they get less in return. Is this fair? Is this right?
The answer is NO!

— Jameson W. Nyeholt

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
Public higher education is crucial to the future health of California. Education is the single most important aspect of living a happy, productive life and being a good citizen. As technology advances, California needs a strong, skilled labor force to keep up and remain competitive in the nation and in the world. Please remember the needs of California’s students.

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
It’s been proven that higher education improves quality of life as well as earning power later in life. It’s been estimated that those who go to college earn a million dollars more over their lifetime. Taken collectively, this means a net loss of billions later when the current generation grows up and lacks a college education. Think about this [the] next time the government cuts funding to the state colleges.
