Music gains lasting recognition when it is a product of the artist’s genuine creativity

Dear Editor,

The other day, I read Chasen Doerr’s op-ed about musical artists and how people like Ke$ha and Chris Brown won’t last, which I completely agree with. But I don’t agree with the idea that “The most successful bands and artists are those who give fans what they want.” Most Brittany Spears fans heard exactly what they want on her new album, but the album won’t make as big of a mark as her first few albums did. Sometimes what the fans want isn’t necessarily what’s going to last. The bands or artists that will last are the ones that are devoted to the theme and genre of music they like to produce, and the ones that do it from their heart and not for the money or the fans. It’s like an artist. They paint, draw or sketch whatever image they’ve created in their minds and not necessarily the image the audience wants to see.

The reason mainstream artists won’t last is because of their lack of creativity and uniqueness. If Usher is still being talked about decades from now, why wouldn’t Chris Brown, Trey Songz or Jeremih? All of their music doesn’t sound that much different from one another. Whereas artists like Nirvana who go out and create their own style of music and disregard whatever is “in” during that time always last. It’s the passion that drives an artist’s confidence to overcome the risk of sounding different that makes them last and not their ability to “fit in.”
