Letter to the Editor: Low-income schools need more funding

Low-income schools need more funding

In the history of the education system, there have been efforts to eliminate racial segregation and provide children with the same quality education.

For example, Mendez v. Westminster and Brown v. Board of Education set out to eliminate racial segregation in public schools.

However, despite of this effort, are schools really desegregated?

Consider public schools in Santa Barbara and Watts. They greatly differ.

Why is this?

Elementary and secondary schools receive almost half of their funding from property tax. What does this imply for our schools?

It leaves low-income community schools at a disadvantage.

This is a problem because today’s youth is tomorrow’s future, and not investing in our students means not investing in our future.

We encourage you to advocate for school funding based on each school’s individual needs.

Remember, it is up to us to make a difference, and it starts with having our voices heard!
