The Beach captures Commissioner’s Cup

Commissioner’s Cup Standings

Long Beach State finished first in the 2008-09 Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings, marking the second time the 49ers have captured the cup.

LBSU teams won four conference championships – women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, women’s golf and women’s soccer – in the fall and spring seasons to average 110 points in the 14 Big West sports where it competes.

The 49ers also added a second place finish in men’s basketball and a third place showing in softball.

Cal Poly placed second after a strong spring season in which the Mustangs captured a conference title in softball, a second place finish in women’s track and field, and third place finishes in women’s tennis, baseball and men’s track and field.

The Anteaters of UC Irvine finished third after posting titles in men’s soccer, baseball and women’s water polo.

To determine the Commissioner’s Cup winner, points are tallied and averaged based on an institution’s performance in Big West sports that it competes. Each sport champion is also given a 20-point bonus. The school with the highest points average is declared the winner.
