Grady earns Academic All-America honor

Long Beach State senior Hannah Grady was named an Academic All-America by ESPN The Magazine and College Sports Information Directors of America on Tuesday.

Grady became the first women’s tennis player in LBSU history to earn the distinction.

The native of Coventry, England was the four-time Big West Player of the Year, and is the winningest player in the history of the 49er program. Grady boasted a 41-1 record in singles matches.

The 49ers grabbed their sixth consecutive Big West championship this past season, earning a trip to Palo Alto for the NCAA first round. LBSU went 18-7, whil posting an undefeated 8-0 mark in Big West action.

She also was an Academic All-Big West selection, posting a 3.93 GPA while working toward a degree in political science.

Grady earned the honor in the at-large category, which consists of NCAA women’s sports other than soccer, softball, basketball, track and field and volleyball.

The Academic All-America honorees are split into three teams of 15 athletes, which came from a pool of nominations and winners from Academic All-District honors.

The Beach has had at least one student-athlete earn Academic All-America recognition over the past six years, and 11 out of the last 12. Overall, LBSU has seen 16 individual athletes attain the distinction.
