Summer league in session for 49er men’s hoops

Some members of the Long Beach State men’s basketball team are using the summer to fine-tune their skills for the upcoming season as they are taking part in the Nike Say No Classic summer league.

The Say No Classic is an NCAA approved summer league that takes varying levels of college talent and breaks them into two 12-team divisions. This season the SNC, which ends Aug. 9, has been taking place at Cal Poly Pomona and Trade Technical College in Los Angeles.

Sophomore Eugene Phelps has emerged as an offensive force for Sinclair’s Bruins in the Los Angeles division. The 6-foot-6 forward ranks seventh in both points and rebounds in the division with 20.2 and 6.8 respectively through five games.

Phelps averaged 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game for The Beach last season as a freshman. The Los Angeles native is ranked just ahead of Big West first-team select Kyle Austin of UC Riverside, who is averaging 19.7 points per game.

Incoming freshman Kyle Richardson joins Phelps on the Bruins along with future UCLA players Reeves Nelson, Anthony Stover, and Mike Moser.

Redshirt freshman Mike Vantrimpont is also playing in the L.A. division as part of the West Coast Hoops squad. The 7-footer is joined by Southern California players Marcus Simmons and Leonard Washington as well as Arizona State guard Derek Glasser.

Guards Greg Plater and Brandon Nevens are playing along side senior big man Andrew Fleming for the SoCal Warriors in the Pomona division.

Plater, primarily a 3-point specialist, averaged 3.2 points per game last season for the ‘Niners in 28 games. Fleming was mainly used as an inside presence in the past, but he is expected to contribute more often this season.

Nevens, a transfer from Cal State Bakersfield, missed all of the 2008-09 season with an injury will compete for minutes in a crowded backcourt.
