Men’s basketball: Top 100 recruit verbally commits

Jacob Thomas, a 6-foot-4 guard from Columbia Heights High School (Minn.), verbally committed to play basketball at Long Beach State, Sunday morning.

Thomas is rated by ESPN.com as the No. 25 shooting guard — No. 89 overall — among Class of 2010 prospects.

The sharpshooter also considered offers from the likes of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Iowa and Iowa State. He joins Long Beach Poly High School standout Shelton Boykin on the list of high school seniors who have expressed interest in playing for the 49ers.

Both players can sign national letters of intent beginning Nov. 11.

Women’s Volleyball: Washington named Player of the Week

Senior Naomi Washington picked up Big West Conference Player of the Week honors after leading the 49ers to a 2-1 weekend in her hometown New Orleans, La.

The middle blocker belted a career high 29 kills against Tulane in a win where the ‘Niners dropped the first two sets. She finished with 61 kills, 10 digs and nine blocks in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic, hammering 19 kills in a 3-2 win over New Orleans, and 13 in a 3-1 loss to Louisiana State.

Washington is the first LBSU player to receive the Player of the Week recognition this season.
