Women’s Volleyball: ‘Niners complete season sweep of Cal Poly

Senior middle blocker Naomi Washington recorded 14 kills on .480 hitting to lead the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team past Cal Poly, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22, Friday night in San Luis Obispo.

LBSU (14-5, 7-2 Big West Conference) blistered the Mustangs with a .343 hitting percentage for the match. Setter Ashley Lee handed out a match-high 38 assists to go with seven digs and four kills. Beach libero Lauren Minkel collected 15 digs to lead all players.

Cal Poly (6-18, 2-9 Big West) received a 14-kill effort from Megan McConnell, who hit .314 for the match.

The Beach concludes its Central Coast trip Halloween night at UC Santa Barbara with the match slated for a 7 p.m. start.

Cross Country: Big West Conference Championships set for Saturday morning.

The 49er men’s and women’s cross country teams will race for the Big West Conference crown Sunday morning at UC Riverside’s Agricultural Operations Course.

The men’s 8K race is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start, while the women’s 6K is set for 9:45 a.m. The 49er men placed fifth in last season’s conference championship. The women turned in a sixth-place showing.

Cal Poly, the defending men’s champion, will aim for its seventh consecutive Big West title, while UCR will attempt to duplicate last season’s championship performance on the women’s side.
