Women’s Tennis: Alawi receives Freshman of the Year award

Jaklin Alawi was named the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, making her the fourth Long Beach State player in six years to earn the distinction.

Alawi, who spent the majority of the season playing at No. 1 singles for the 49ers, was also named to the Big West first team for singles and earned first-team doubles honors alongside partner Rachel Manasse.

Sophomore Anais Dallara joined Alawi on the All-Big West team for singles, picking up first-team honors for the first time. Junior Deborah Armstrong bagged her third postseason award, earning an honorable mention after playing at the No. 3 singles spot for LBSU for most of the season.

Dallara and Armstrong received second-team All-Big West recognition for doubles.

Long Beach did not receive an NCAA at-large bid when the 64-team women’s tennis tournament bracket was unveiled Tuesday afternoon, marking the first time since 2003 that the 49ers will miss out on NCAA tournament action.

The Beach (19-6) won the Big West regular season title after running through the regular season with an 8-0 conference record, but had its 2010 campaign ended with a loss to UC Irvine in the conference tournament championship match.
