Figueroa released by Sparks

Long Beach State senior Karina Figueroa was released by the Los Angeles Sparks as the team was making final cuts to its 2010 roster.

“These are tough decisions to make because we’re trying to put the best team out on the floor that can win us a championship,” Sparks Head Coach Jennifer Gillom said following the final preseason game.

Figueroa, who signed a one-year contract with L.A. in April, played in two exhibition games before her release. The 5-foot-8 guard played a combined 25 minutes in the two games.

She made her debut against the China Women’s National Team, scoring two points, dishing out three assists and snatching one steal.

The Corona native made her return to the Walter Pyramid in the Sparks’ final preseason contest, going 0-for-3 and pulling down two rebounds.

“She’s not down on herself,” LBSU senior and former teammate Brett Timmons said. “She knows she’s meant to be in the league and that’s still her ultimate goal. For now, she’s just going to keep getting better.”
