Baseball: Dirtbags release 2011 schedule

The Dirtbags released their 2011 schedule on Tuesday, which includes a home-and-home series with Big West Conference rival Cal State Fullerton.

As it did in 2010, Long Beach State will have one of the more challenging nonconference schedules in the nation. The Dirtbags open the season with a monster homestand spanning 12 games and the entire month of February. The Titans will be up first for LBSU with a nonconference series at Blair Field beginning Feb. 18.

The Dirtbags will return to CSUF’s Goodwin Field on May 13 for a return series with the Titans.

Within those first 12 contests, the Dirtbags will host three Pac-10 schools, including Oregon and USC. LBSU went 8-8 last season in games against Pac-10 opponents.

The Dirtbags will also take part in the Cal tournament at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Big West foe UC Santa Barbara will join LBSU in the six-team tournament hosted by the Golden Bears.

Stanford will host the Dirtbags on March 25 for a series in Palo Alto.

LBSU will begin Big West play on the road in Stockton when they face the Pacific Tigers on April 1. The Dirtbags went 23-32 overall and 7-17 in the Big West last season, but have a new head coach in Troy Buckley for 2011.

Men’s basketball: Caffey commits to 49ers

Multiple sources, including the Press-Telegram, are reporting that the 49ers received a verbal commitment from Centennial High School (Corona, Calif.) guard Michael Caffey on Monday.

The 5-foot-11 point guard, from the class of 2011, averaged 12.6 points and 7.3 assists per game for the Huskies last season.

Junior Casper Ware averaged 33.2 minutes played per game last season for The Beach, which was tops on the team. Recruits cannot sign an official letter of intent until the November signing period.
