Men’s water polo: ‘Niners picked to finish No.7 in MPSF

The 49ers were selected seventh in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation preseason coaches poll released on Monday.

LBSU received 18 points in the nine-team poll, which features teams such as UCLA, Stanford and California.

The Golden Bears received the top spot with 58 overall points and four first-place votes. Cal was followed by UCLA – last season’s conference tournament champion – and Stanford.

Defending back-to-back national champs USC were slotted fourth with 44 points and one first-place vote. The Trojans finished 26-2 overall and 8-0 in MPSF play last season.

UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara took fifth and sixth, respectively. Pacific and Pepperdine followed The Beach in the eighth and ninth positions.

The 49ers finished the 2009 season with a 9-12 overall record and went just 1-7 in the MPSF. They also did not qualify for the eight-team MPSF tournament.

Alexsandr Petrovic and Jordan Koeppen highlight the returning starters in 2010.

The Beach will begin its season on Sept. 4 as part of the UCI Invitational. The 49ers’ first home opponent will be the Anteaters on Oct. 16 at noon.

Women’s volleyball: LBSU left out of AVCA Top 25

LBSU earned 132 votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 national preseason poll Tuesday, but it was not enough as the 49ers were left without a ranking.

The 49ers’ 132 votes were the most for any school not included in the poll.

The Beach will host four teams ranked in the poll with its toughest opponent coming on the road. Head coach Brian Gimmillaro’s squad will take on No. 3 Texas on Sept. 4 in Austin.

No. 25 Saint Mary’s will make a trip to the Walter Pyramid on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. for the Long Beach State Baden Classic. The ‘Niners will also host No. 22 San Diego on Sept. 10 as part of the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational.

LBSU’s other ranked road opponent will be No. 17 Colorado State on Sept. 17.

Men’s basketball: Monson receives another 2011 commitment

The Press-Telegram’s Frank Burlison reported on Aug. 13 that the 49ers received their second 2011 commitment from Shaquille Hunter (Villa Park High School).

The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 21 points per game last season as a junior. The Beach received its first commitment from Michael Caffey earlier this summer.

Both players have verbal commitments that can become official when the pair signs letter of intents in November.
