As expected, the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team cracked the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll released Monday.
The No. 23 49ers (4-0) were ranked ahead of Arizona and San Diego, which both dropped in the poll. Penn State maintained the No. 1 spot.
The Beach posted three convincing sweeps and a five-set victory over then-No. 25 Saint Mary’s in an opening-weekend home tournament last Friday and Saturday. The Gaels were left off this week’s poll.
LBSU was left off the preseason poll but received the most votes of any unranked team, so the victory over the Gaels all but guaranteed a spot.
Conference recognition
Caitlin Ledoux, who earned the Baden Classic tournament’s most valuable player honor, was named the season’s first Big West Conference Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday.
The junior outside hitter nabbed her third career honor after posting double-doubles in all four matches while leading The Beach in kills each match. Ledoux, who averaged a .308 hitting percentage, capped the tournament with a season-high 26 kills, eight digs and six blocks.
The ‘Niners return to action on the road for a two-day, two-match set in Austin, Texas. LBSU will face Florida A&M on Friday (2 p.m.) and No. 2 Texas on Saturday (4:30 p.m.). The Longhorns moved up from No. 3 after Nebraska lost and dropped to No. 7.
