Women’s volleyball

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team dropped one spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll released Monday.

The 49ers (6-2) were ranked 24th while San Diego, which defeated The Beach in four sets last week, moved up from 25th to 23rd in the national rankings.

Stanford defeated Penn State last week, snapping its 109-match winning streak to help the Cardinal leapfrog the Nittany Lions for the No. 1 spot.

LBSU will travel to Colorado this weekend for four matches, including a meeting with No. 14 Colorado State. The Rams were ranked 15th last week.

The 49ers will start the trip Friday in Fort Collins with a doubleheader against Virginia Commonwealth (11 a.m.) and Colorado State (6 p.m.). The following day, the ‘Niners will head to Denver for matches against Middle Tennessee State (noon) and Denver (6 p.m.).

Men’s water polo

No. 9 Long Beach State (2-1) is set to take on Pacific (4-0) in its first match at the 2010 NorCal Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Tournament this Saturday. The contest is scheduled for a 9:20 a.m. start at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Calif.

With a win over the Tigers, LBSU would play the winner of a match between UCLA and Air Force at 2:40 p.m. A loss for the ‘Niners would result in a match with the loser of the contest between the Bruins and Falcons at 1:20 p.m.

Two victories on Saturday would ensure a match at University of California’s Spieker Aquatic Complex on Sunday. With a loss on Saturday — in either game ¬— the 49ers would continue to play at Diablo Valley College on Sunday.
