No. 24 ‘Niners cruise past VCU in sweep

Box score

The return of the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team’s starting setter was a smooth transition the second time around.

No. 24 LBSU (7-2) swept Virginia Commonwealth, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19, in the first match of a doubleheader Friday in Fort Collins, Colo.

Senior Ashley Lee, who sat out the 49ers’ victory over Virginia last week, was back in the starting lineup and collected 45 assists in the victory.

A trio of 49ers finished with double-digit kills, including Janisa Johnson (16), Caitlin Ledoux (15) and Haleigh Hampton (12). Johnson, along with libero Lauren Minkel, also added 11 digs.

Ledoux and Hampton were efficient, hitting .407 and .526, respectively. As a team, LBSU hit .383 and was above the .470 mark in each of the first two sets.

VCU (1-12), which hit just .100 in the final set, was led by eight kills apiece from Kristin Boyd and Mariel Frey.

The ‘Niners will return to the floor at 6 p.m. PT for a matchup against No. 14 Colorado State.
