The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team closed its trip to Colorado with a four-set victory over host Denver on Saturday night.

The 49ers (9-3) received an efficient effort from junior Michelle Osunbor and posted a 28-26, 19-25, 25-14, 25-19 victory.

LBSU’s 6-foot-2 middle blocker tied her career high with nine kills on .444 hitting and eight blocks. Senior setter Ashley Lee did a little bit of everything, recording 43 assists, 10 digs and six kills.

Also chipping in were Caitlin Ledoux (team-high 14 kills to go with eight digs) and Haleigh Hampton (13 kills).

The Pioneers (6-9) were led by Alyssa Bonelli’s 14 kills and eight blocks.

Denver was limited to an .050 attack in the final set which it lost 25-19.

The teams were tied at 15 midway through the set, but the ‘Niners went on a 6-1 run to pull away and Janisa Johnson sealed the match with the final kill.

The 49ers jumped on the Pioneers immediately in the third set en route to a 25-14 victory.

LBSU head coach Brian Gimmillaro put Libby Fontanilla on the floor instead of Johnson to start the third set.

Johnson responded when she checked in later in the frame, contributing to a commanding 11-3 lead. The ‘Niners led by as many as 12 points and cruised to the win.

Denver tied the match with a 25-19 win in set two. Leading 19-18, Denver closed the set on a 6-1 run capped by a Hampton blocking error.

LBSU overcame a nine-point deficit to post a come-from-behind, 28-26 victory in the first set.

The 49ers, who were coming off a five-set letdown to Middle Tennessee State earlier in the day, quickly fell behind 8-2 in the opening set.

Things didn’t look any better for the ‘Niners after burning their first timeout. The Pioneers extended the lead to 14-5 before LBSU started to make its run.

The Beach scored 12 of the next 14 points to take its first lead of the frame. The teams would play to three more ties before the 49ers closed out the Pioneers.

LBSU will return to California and play at Loyola Marymount next Friday at 7 p.m.
