Freshman earns first player of the week accolade

Long Beach State freshman Haleigh Hampton was named the Big West Conference’s co-Player of the Week for women’s volleyball on Monday.

The 6-foot-7 middle blocker hit a combined .379 in four matches over the weekend in Colorado. In a five-set upset over then-No. 14 Colorado State, Hampton tied a team-high with 18 kills on .517 hitting to go with five blocks.

The win helped move LBSU (9-3) up a spot to No. 23 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll released Monday.

The 49ers posted a 3-1 record with victories over Virginia Commonwealth, Denver and Colorado State, which dropped four spots to No. 18.

Stanford received 59 of 60 first-place votes to retain the No. 1 rank. Penn State, ranked second, received the other first-place vote.

UC Davis’ Betsy Sedlak was also named player of the week.

The 49ers visit Loyola Marymount Friday at 7 p.m. before returning to the Walter Pyramid for the start of Big West play on Saturday against Cal State Fullerton.
