Women’s basketball schedule released

Second-year head coach Jody Wynn released the Long Beach State women’s basketball team’s 2010-11 schedule Monday afternoon.

After a preseason exhibition against Cal Poly Pomona at the Walter Pyramid, the 49ers will open the regular season with a pair of road games at Oregon State (Nov. 13) and Loyola Marymount (Nov. 15). LBSU, which finished 13-17 last season, will host Oregon in the home opener Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

“We are thrilled to have our schedule complete with a very competitive group of nonconference opponents,” Wynn said in a press release. “Our philosophy is to build our schedule with strong teams that will challenge and prepare us for March. Our young team will be shown right away the level we must compete at in order to win the Big West [Conference] Tournament.”

The ‘Niners will then head back on the road for two weeks, starting with a contest against Wynn’s alma mater USC (Nov. 21) at the Galen Center. LBSU will participate in the eight-team Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown (Nov. 26-28) and open the tournament against Illinois. The Beach could also face North Carolina, Washington State, North Carolina Central, Gonzaga, Mississippi and host Hawaii.

The 49ers will head to Houston, Texas, the following week to open the Gene Hackerman Invitational against Prairie View A&M (Dec. 3).

LBSU will make a quick trip home to face San Diego (Dec. 8) before heading north to face California (Dec. 11).

Wynn’s team will then host the Long Beach State Classic and face Florida A&M (Dec. 19) as well as 2010 NCAA Tournament participant North Carolina State (Dec. 21).

Big West play will open when UC Santa Barbara visits the Pyramid on Dec. 30. The Gauchos eliminated the ‘Niners from last season’s Big West Tournament. LBSU posted a 9-7 record in conference play last year.
