LBSU women blown out in season opener

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team lost its season opener on the road at Oregon State, 71-39, in front of 1,562 fans Saturday night at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers (1-0) made 40.7 percent of their field goals, while limiting the 49ers (0-1) to 35.6 percent. OSU also forced 27 LBSU turnovers.

Senior Ashley Bookman led the ‘Niners with a career-high 12 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Freshman Ella Clark chipped in eight points and first-year guard Brandi Henton added seven.

Alyssa Martin paced the Beavers with 24 points, while Alexis Bostick added 14 points and six assists. Angela Misa also finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Oregon State raced out to an 8-0 advantage before junior Alyssa Starkey got the 49ers on the board just over five minutes into the game with a pair of free throws.

Clark had LBSU’s first field goal with 13:48 on the clock, igniting a 10-3 run, which brought The Beach within 15-12 at the 9:44 mark. The 49ers then went on a scoring drought, however, converting just one field goal the rest of the way as OSU took a 28-14 lead into halftime.

OSU went on a 9-0 spurt after intermission to go up 37-14 and the 49ers were unable to recover as they trailed by at least 20 the rest of the way. The Beavers took their largest lead of the game at 71-36 with 1:01 on the clock.

The 49ers return to the court on Monday night when they travel to Loyola Marymount for a 7 p.m. contest.

Game notes: Wynn started three freshmen — Henton, Clark and Sendy Valles. Another freshman, 6-foot-3 Janae Coffee, logged 13 minutes of the bench in the loss.
