‘Niners rebound with win over St. Peter’s

The Long Beach State men’s basketball team received an all-around effort from junior Larry Anderson en route to its first win of the three-day Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Anderson and fellow junior T.J. Robinson both collected double-doubles as the 49ers led for the final 30 minutes of action in a 68-56 win over St. Peter’s on Saturday.

The Beach (2-2) battled back-and-forth with the Peacocks (0-3) in the opening minutes of the game, but a layup by Eugene Phelps at the 9:36 mark pulled the 49ers even and they never looked back.

Anderson led LBSU in scoring for the second straight game with a game-high 20 points and tied with Robinson for a game-high 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-5 forward made six of his seven shots from the field and both of his 3-point attempts. Anderson also went 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Robinson pitched in with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting and converted six of his 10 free throws.

The 49ers also received contributions from their three other starters as Phelps, Casper Ware and Greg Plater had nine points apiece.

St. Peter’s was led by forward Darius Conley’s 13 points off the bench. Steven Samuels and Blaise Ffrench also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Yvon Raymond had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with eight points for the Peacocks.

The 49ers’ bench was outscored 23-4 in the game as LBSU’s Corey Jackson (four points) was the only reserve to score.

Head coach Dan Monson’s squad will have Sunday off as it awaits the winner of the Alabama and Iowa game, which is taking place on Saturday afternoon. The fourth-place game is scheduled for Monday at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
