49ers lose game, Anderson in Seattle

The Long Beach State men’s basketball team suffered two separate setbacks Tuesday night at the University of Washington. Not only did the 49ers drop a road contest with the No. 22 Huskies, 102-75, they also lost a key scoring threat in the process.

Junior Larry Anderson broke his hand during the second half of the game at Hec Edmundson Pavilion and is expected to miss the next few weeks, according to a press release.

The Huskies (4-2) avoided a three game losing streak after previously falling to No. 10 Kentucky and No. 6 Michigan State, while The Beach (3-4) lost its second straight despite T.J. Robinson’s fourth consecutive double-double.

The sophomore forward led the way for LBSU with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Casper Ware added 18 points, five assists and two steals. Ware had a solid night by hitting three of his four 3-point attempts, but struggled to control the ball as he finished the night with seven turnovers.

Guard C.J. Wilcox came off the bench to chip in a career-high 20 points and four rebounds in 23 minutes. Wilcox also connected on six of eight shots from behind the arc and was one of seven Huskies to score in double figures.

UW starting point guard Isaiah Thomas put together a nice all around game for the Huskies with 19 points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals.

The Beach allowed UW to shoot 14-of-26 on their 3-point attempts, the most from any LBSU opponent so far this season. The loss to the Huskies also marked the first time this season the 49ers have surrendered 100 or more points.

The game got away from the 49ers early as the Huskies lead got up to 17 at one point in the first half and the team entered halftime facing a 16 point deficit. UW had a lead as big as 31 points in the contest.

Greg Plater made four of his 11 3-point shots and had 13 points. Eugene Phelps also found double figures with 11 points along with four rebounds and three assists.

The 49ers return home on Thursday to play BYU Hawaii (3-1) at 7:05 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
