Freshman center quits women’s hoops team

For the second time in as many seasons, Long Beach State women’s basketball head coach Jody Wynn has lost a post player midway through the season.

Janae Coffee, a 6-foot-3 freshman center, was first suspended for violating team rules for a second time this season. Then, she talked to the second-year head coach and quit the team Saturday.

“She said she doesn’t want to play basketball anymore, that her heart’s not into it,” Wynn said after the 49ers’ 72-62 victory over Florida A&M at the Walter Pyramid on Sunday. “And that she doesn’t want to practice, doesn’t want to train, doesn’t want to run.

“She felt like she can’t continue to go through what it takes to be a Division I student-athlete.”

As a result, Coffee’s scholarship was revoked.

Coffee, the team’s third-leading scorer, averaged 7.0 points and 5.4 rebounds in 15.9 minutes through 11 games.

Last season, Wynn disciplined and dismissed Whitney Fields for similar team rules violations.
