Senior receives NCAA eligibility extension

After missing the past two men’s basketball seasons with a kidney ailment that changed his life, Brandon Nevens received a Christmas present two years in the making on Thursday.

Long Beach State head coach Dan Monson announced that Nevens will rejoin the 49ers immediately after an extension of his five-year clock was granted by the NCAA for the 2010-11 academic year.

In September 2008 during offseason workouts, Nevens collapsed on the campus’ Jack Rose Track after a kidney failure.

“As a coach this is one of those situations where you are just excited personally for the player,” Monson said in a statement. “Brandon has been through so much, both physically and emotionally, and has been an integral part of our program for two years without ever participating in a practice or a game. It will be emotional for all of us when we get to see him in a 49er uniform.”

LBSU will open Big West Conference play on the road at UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
