No. 11 LBSU splits opener with top-5 foes

The No. 11 Long Beach State men’s volleyball team stunned second-ranked UC Irvine, 3-1, in its season opener Friday at the Gaucho Invitational in Goleta.

LBSU (1-1) then dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 5 BYU in the semifinals later in the day.

The 49ers defeated the Anteaters, 12-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21. Junior opposite hitter Jim Baughman was the 49ers’ leading attacker, while senior libero Kory Matsukado anchored the back row.

The Cougars took care of The Beach, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22, in the nightcap.

Statistics were not available at the time of the release.

LBSU will face No. 9 UCLA in the third-place match Saturday at 4 p.m. in Robertson Gymnasium.
