Bats power The Beach to split in Las Vegas

LBSU 13, Southern Ill.-Edwardsville 5 (5 innings, mercy-rule victory)

The Long Beach State softball team posted a season-high 13 runs in a 13-5 mercy-rule victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in five innings at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

The 49ers (5-1) received a school record-tying six RBIs from first baseman Christina Schallig, who finished 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs. Schallig’s first blast highlighted a six-run fourth inning.

LBSU’s Brianna Stephan, Nalani St. Germain, Caitrin DeBaun, Liz Javier, Karli Sandoval and Megan Denio each finished with two hits. St. Germain, Javier and Sandoval also homered for The Beach.

Trailing 4-1, the ‘Niners picked up two runs in the third after a pair of RBI singles from DeBaun and Javier.

Sandoval tied the game at 4 with a leadoff homer in the fourth. After DeBaun added her second RBI single of the contest, Schallig broke the game open with a three-run homer to left field.

Schallig’s second three-run homer in the following inning tied the school’s RBI record.

Cougars third baseman Kasey Schlafke finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a homer.

LBSU senior pitcher Brooke Turner (1-0) picked up the win after four innings of relief in her 2011 debut. Turner, who had offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in her hip, allowed three earned runs on two hits, walked two batters and struck out four.

Senior Ali Downing was charged with the loss after being hammered for nine earned runs on nine hits in just 1 2/3 innings of relief.

The 49ers will return to the diamond Saturday with a pair of games against Arkansas and Boise State in Las Vegas.

Hawaii 10, LBSU 4

The 49ers gave up six unanswered runs Friday in a 10-4 loss to No. 9-ranked Hawaii at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

Tied at 4 through two innings, the Rainbow Wahine (7-0) scored a run in the third and five more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Catcher Sharla Kliebenstein hit the go-ahead solo home run off 49ers starting pitcher Taylor Petty (2-1), who gave up seven earned runs in four innings before freshman Erin Jones-Wesley took over for the final three innings.

Jones-Wesley allowed three earned runs on just one hit, walked three and struck out four.

LBSU was paced at the plate by leadoff hitter Brianna Stephan, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Second baseman Nalani St. Germain added a two-run homer that highlighted a four-run second inning for the ‘Niners, who trailed 4-0 after an inning.

St. Germain finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Hawaii starter Kaia Parnaby (3-0) struck out seven batters in a complete-game effort and allowed four runs — three earned — on nine hits.
