Led by a pair of freshmen, the Long Beach State softball team stunned No. 6-ranked Oklahoma by carving out a 2-1 victory Friday at the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
LBSU (9-3) scored both runs in the first inning on freshman Sarah Carrasco’s first career home run. The two-out blast to left field scored junior Megan Denio, who had reached base on a walk.
Senior Liz Javier added a single and sophomore Nalani St. Germain hit a double to advance Javier to third, but Oklahoma (11-4) then closed out the inning on a ground out.
The 49ers would only produce one more hit the rest of the way, but it was enough with freshman Erin Jones-Wesley in the pitcher’s circle.
She managed to overcome her own first-inning struggles, getting two outs with the bases loaded to end the inning. The 5-8 hurler also worked out of a based-loaded jam in the third before giving up an earned run in the fourth.
Jones-Wesley (5-0), who left eight Sooners stranded on bases, struck out six batters and allowed six hits in her fourth complete game this season.
Michelle Gascoigne (3-3) took the loss for the Sooners, and allowed four hits in 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
The Beach will battle Florida State on Saturday at 6 p.m. and No. 18 Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m. to close out the tournament.
