Texas A&M 8, LBSU 0

Box score

What started out as a close game ended in five innings via the mercy rule, as the Long Beach State softball team lost 8-0 to No. 21-ranked Texas A&M on Thursday at the Cathedral Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

Junior pitcher Taylor Petty started strong for the 49ers (8-3), striking out three batters in the first inning — only to give up four runs in the third.

With two outs, Petty (3-3) loaded the bases with three walks in a row, then allowed up a two-run single and a two-run triple. She finished with four earned runs on three hits and five strikeouts.

Senior Brooke Turner took over for Petty to record the final out of the third, only to give up four runs in the fourth, including two home runs.

Texas A&M (10-4) pitcher Melissa Dumezich (6-2) limited The Beach to three hits — two by sophomore Bree Stephan — and finished with seven strikeouts.

Next up for LBSU in the Cathedral Classic is No. 6 Oklahoma, which it will face Friday at 10:30 a.m.

LBSU 5, Utah 1

Box score

In Thursday’s first game, the 49ers ended with an exclamation point, beating Utah 5-1 in eight innings.

LBSU scored all five of its runs in the eighth, capitalizing on Utah’s (5-8) three errors and singles by freshmen Sarah Carrasco and Karli Sandoval.

Freshman pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley turned in another solid performance by holding Utah scoreless into the eighth for the win.

Jones-Wesley (4-0) gave up one unearned run on five hits and struck out four. She punctuated the victory by throwing the last batter out at first, ruining Utah’s bases-loaded attempt at a comeback.

Pitcher Naomi Amu (1-2) took the loss for Utah, giving up five runs — only one earned — on seven hits in a complete-game effort.
