LBSU bats quiet in 4-1 loss

A strong start by the Long Beach State softball team was overshadowed by errors and an even stronger start by Florida State on Saturday.

The 49ers lost to the Seminoles, 4-1, in the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

LBSU drew first blood with a bases-loaded walk to Nalani St. Germain in the first inning. But by end of the bottom half of the inning, a passed ball, two errors and two hits had cost the 49ers their lead.

The Beach out-hit its opponents, 7-4, but could not bring in any runs after the first inning. This marks the second game in a row that the offense scored in the first and did not score again. However, the last instance resulted in a win.

Senior pitcher Brooke Turner (1-1) struck out seven and gave up four runs — three of them earned — in six innings.

Morgan Bullock (3-1) took the win for Florida State (9-6), giving up one earned run on four hits over four innings. Sarah Hamilton pitched three scoreless innings for her second save of the season.

LBSU (9-5) returned later in the day and lost 5-3 to No. 19-ranked Oklahoma State.
