A pair of Long Beach State pitchers combined for a one-hitter Thursday to lead the softball team to a 1-0 victory over Brigham Young at the Campbell/Cartier Classic Tournament in San Diego.

Junior starting pitcher Taylor Petty threw four scoreless innings of one-hit ball before senior Brooke Turner pitched the final three hitless innings.

Turner (3-1) picked up the victory after striking out four batters and walking three, while Petty also racked up four strikeouts and walked one.

LBSU (10-6) was led at the plate by senior third baseman Liz Javier, who finished 1-for-3 with a walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning.

The 49ers picked up the win behind a two-out rally. After BYU (7-10) retired the first two hitters, freshman Sarah Carrasco doubled down the left-field line to start the rally. Nalani St. Germain was then walked and the 49ers loaded the bases on an infield single by Christina Schallig. Javier finished the rally with a hit to center field to score Brooke Bell, who pinch ran for Carrasco.

LBSU finished with four hits, three of which came during the game-winning rally.

BYU picked up its lone hit off the bat of senior second baseman Kristin Delahoussaye, who finished 1-for-2. Senior starting pitcher Paige Affleck (4-7) allowed one earned run on four hits, struck out four and walked two in 6 2/3 innings.

Long Beach State produced more hits than San Diego State on Thursday afternoon, but the Aztecs made their base runners count.

The 49ers lost 3-0 at SDSU Softball Stadium despite producing seven hits to the Aztecs’ five.

With SDSU starting pitcher Bailey Micetich out of the game after four shutout innings, the 49ers tried to rally against reliever Samantha Beasley. Trailing 1-0, The Beach was able to put a pair of runners on base, but Carrasco was caught looking on the inside corner for strike three to end the threat.

In the next half of the inning, the Aztecs (7-7) extended the advantage to 3-0 after Justeen Maeva’s single produced a pair of insurance runs.

SDSU scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning.

With a runner on third, Ashley Rose blooped a one-out RBI single out of the reach of diving LBSU center fielder Bree Stephan to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead.

In the top half of the frame, Micetich induced a grounder off the bat of LBSU catcher Karli Sandoval to escape a two-out, bases-loaded jam.

Micetich (5-5) allowed four hits, struck out three and walked two batters. Beasley, who earned her second save, allowed three hits over three innings and struck out one.

After starting her collegiate career with five straight victories, LBSU freshman Erin Jones-Wesley (5-2) was charged with her second consecutive loss. She gave up three earned runs on five hits and struck out five in six innings.

Megan Denio and St. Germain paced the ‘Niners at the plate. Denio went 2-for-2 with a walk, while St. Germain finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

The Beach will resume the tournament with one game Friday. The 49ers will face the first of three ranked opponents in two days when they meet No. 24-ranked Houston at 1:30 p.m.
