Turner, Petty command the circle again

Nalani St. Germain provided all the offense that the Long Beach State softball team needed to beat No. 23-ranked Houston, 3-0, Friday at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in San Diego, Calif.

The 5-foot-9 sophomore had the only two hits for the 49ers (11-6), including a three-run home run in the first inning. She finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two stolen bases.

St. Germain’s fourth blast of the season came with two outs, scoring sophomores Bree Stephan and Caitrin DeBaun, who had made it on base on a pair of walks.

After combining on a one-hitter the previous day, junior Taylor Petty and senior Brooke Turner combined for 10 strikeouts while giving up only three combined hits. Turner (4-1), who struck out four, came away the win after pitching the final four innings.

Amanda Crabtree (9-1) took her first loss of the season for Houston, giving up St. Germain’s two hits and three earned runs over seven innings. She also struck out 12 LBSU batters.

LBSU’s match-ups Saturday include Fresno State (1:30 p.m.) and Baylor (3:45 p.m.) to wrap up the Campbell/Cartier Tournament.
