FULLERTON – The Long Beach State women’s softball team was unable to match No.19-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette’s power in a 9-5 loss on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic on Saturday.
The Beach came unwound in the third inning with the score tied, 1-1. A bunt single by Narissa Myers prompted a five-run inning that included a grand slam off senior pitcher Brooke Turner (6-3) by Ragin’ Cajuns designated hitter Jennifer Martin.
Turner was then relieved by junior Taylor Petty, but not before the senior surrendered six earned runs off seven hits in just two innings of work.
St. Germain got one back for the 49ers in the fourth with her fifth home run of the season. The shot marked the 13th of her career, tying her for fifth all time in program history with Marcel Torres.
It looked as though the ‘Niners (17-10) would rally in the fifth when they scored three runs on four hits to cut the deficit to 6-5, but Louisiana-Lafayette proved to be too much for Petty, too.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (24-5) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-5 lead.
Petty finished with five strikeouts and gave up only one hit, however, she allowed six walks.
Ashley Brignac (12-2) picked up the victory for Louisiana-Lafayette as she pitched her second consecutive game, striking out nine batters. She also gave up eight hits and four earned runs.
LBSU will conclude the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday with a doubleheader. First pitch against Illinois is scheduled for 11 a.m., while the final game will be played against San Jose State at 3:00 p.m.
