The Long Beach State softball team couldn’t close the door on a sweep in the first day of Big West Conference play, losing 3-1 to Pacific in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader in Stockton, Calif.

LBSU (23-11, 1-1 Big West) put the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Nalani St. Germain scored on senior Liz Javier’s double down the right field line.

The Beach’s run was quickly erased by the Tigers (20-12, 1-1 Big West) in the bottom half of the fourth when senior pitcher Brooke Turner (7-4) gave up a single to Pacific catcher Amy Moore, who drove in left-fielder Megan Foglesong to even the score.

Turner took the loss for the 49ers, giving up a second earned run in the fifth before being relieved by junior Taylor Petty. Turner struck out two and gave up four hits.

Tori Shephard (7-4) earned the win for Pacific, allowing an earned run on four hits. She struck out three.

The Long Beach State softball team started conference play by shutting out Pacific, 6-0, in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday in Stockton.

49ers freshman pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley (12-3) struck out seven in the shutout, giving up six hits and one walk.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when a two-out single by senior Liz Javier ignited a four-run rally.

Senior Christina Schallig doubled Javier in, and then advanced to third on the throw. Sophomore Caitrin DeBaun drove in Schallig, and after a walk to freshman Dana Garcia, a double by junior Alisha Rosen drove in two more runs.

That may have been all the ‘Niners needed to win, but they weren’t done just yet.

After sophomore Nalani St. Germain singled in the top of the seventh, junior Jennifer Madigan pinch hit for Javier to drive in St. Germain with a double to right center. After Schallig and Garcia walked, Rosen garnered her third RBI on a bases-loaded walk.

Nikki Armagost (9-8) took the loss for the Tigers as she gave up up eleven hits and six earned runs.

LBSU will close out its three-game series against Pacific in Stockton on Sunday. Game time is set for noon.
