Pop fly in seventh costs series for LBSU

Box score

After splitting the first two games of its three-game series against the University of Pacific, the Long Beach State softball team lost a seventh-inning heartbreaker Sunday, 3-2, at Bill Simoni Field in Stockton, Calif.

Freshman Erin Jones-Wesley (12-4) was charged with the loss for LBSU (23-12, 1-2 Big West Conference) when she gave up a triple to Tigers (21-12, 2-1 Big West) left fielder Megan Foglesong and then hit shortstop Nicole Matson on a 2-0 pitch.

Junior Taylor Petty came in at that point to relieve Jones-Wesley, and succeeded in getting two quick outs.

However, a walk given up to second baseman Alexa Rivera to load the bases would spell the beginning of the end for the 49ers.

With two outs, Kelsey Rodriguez iced the game for the Tigers with a two-run single after LBSU shortstop Alisha Rosen lost sight of a routine pop fly in the sun.

LBSU took the lead in the second on Rosen’s RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to junior Megan Denio.

Jones-Wesley gave up an unearned run in the third, but held Pacific until the final inning. She finished with four strikeouts and eight hits.

Tori Shepard (8-4) earned the victory for the Tigers as she surrendered two earned runs on six hits, while striking out two batters in seven innings of work.

The Beach will return home to continue Big West action next week against Cal State Northridge at the 49er Softball Complex. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
