Freshman guides ‘Niners in sweep of UC Davis

Freshman Erin Jones-Wesley allowed just four hits in five innings while striking out eight to lead Long Beach State women’s softball team to a 3-1 win over UC Davis at the 49er Softball Complex on Sunday.

Jones-Wesley (16-4) picked up her second win in as many days to help LBSU (28-13, 6-3 Big West) to a three-game sweep of the Aggies (18-19, 3-6 Big West).

The 49er pitcher also delivered the go-ahead RBI with a single to right center in the bottom of the fourth inning to put LBSU on top 2-1.

Jones-Wesley allowed just one unearned run in the game, and held UCD to just five hits in 10 innings with 13 strikeouts in her two starts.

Junior Taylor Petty retired six of the seven batters she faced in two innings of relief to pick up her third save of the season.

UC Davis scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Elizabeth Santana scored from third on a wild pitch by Jones-Wesley on a swinging third strike on Heather Zimmerman.

Santana had moved to third on a fielding error by Jones-Wesley on a sacrifice bunt by Kelly Schulze.

However, the freshman ace escaped the inning after inducing Kylie Fan to line out to Nalani St. Germain before Kelly Harman hit a grounder back to Jones-Wesley for another easy out.

The 49ers rallied to score two runs in their half of the fourth inning. Senior Liz Javier singled to right to score St. Germain, who reached on a throwing error, moved to second on a wild pitch and beat a throw to third base on a fielder’s choice by Sarah Carrasco.

After a another fielder’s choice on a ball hit by Christina Schallig forced Brooke Bell at third, Jones-Wesley drove in her fourth run of the season to put the 49ers on top for the first time in the contest.

LBSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Dana Garcia, who entered the game in the top of the inning as a part of a double switch that brought Petty in to pitch, singled to left field with two outs to score pinch runner Megan Denio from second base.

Javier spearheaded LBSU’s offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Alex Holmes led the Aggies with two hits. Jessica Thweatt (6-5) took the loss for the Aggies.

The 49ers will continue Big West action with a doubleheader Friday at Noon against Cal Poly in San Louis Obispo, Calif.
