Read signs three high school recruits

Long Beach State men’s volleyball head coach Andy Read announced the signing of Eric Ensing, Chet Radish and Andrew Whitt to National Letters of Intent on Tuesday. The trio will join the 49ers for the 2012-13 season.

“All three incoming freshmen are going to have an immediate impact on Long Beach State Men’s Volleyball,” Read said in a release. “They are great athletes who jump well and are powerful attackers. They are also great teammates and competitive winners.”

Eric Ensing, a 6-8 senior outside/opposite hitter at Valencia High School, earned second-team All-Foothill League honors and helped the Vikings advance to the quarterfinals of the Division II CIF-Southern Section playoffs last year. Ensing also led his Legacy club team to an 11th-place finish in the 17-Open division at the 2011 USAV Boys’ Junior National Championships.

“Eric is a strong attacker from both pins and the back row, and he has a point-scoring jump serve,” Read said. “He can play either outside hitter or opposite and be great at both.”

Chet Radish, a 6-6 outside hitter from Mountain View, Calif., He is a senior at Homestead High School. In 2011, he earned first-team All-DeAnza League honors and led the Mustangs to the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs. Radish also plays for Mountain View Volleyball Club where he earned all-tournament honors after helping his squad to a bronze medal in the 17-Open division of the 2011 USAV Boys’ Junior National Championships.

“Chet is an all-around outstanding player,” Read said. “He can do it all on the volleyball court; pass, hit, serve, block and play solid defense in the back row. He is a fierce competitor both in practice and in matches.”

Andrew Whitt, a 6-4 senior outside hitter from Laguna Hills High School, is in his third year of playing volleyball after making the transition from basketball. He was a second-team All-Pacific Coast League selection in 2010. Whitt also plays for the Balboa Bay volleyball club and helped his squad tie for fifth at the 17-Open USAV Boys’ Junior National Championships in 2011.

“Andrew changed over to volleyball from basketball during high school,” Read said, “and all of his outstanding athletic ability and vertical jump has translated into being a huge threat as both a hitter and blocker. He is a tireless player in practice and is always looking to go above and beyond in every drill.”
