Long Beach State senior point guard Casper Ware was named a candidate for the Bob Cousy Award on Monday. The honor recognizes college basketball’s top point guard.
Ware is one of 60 players to be named to the watch list, marking the second time in his career he has been recognized with the honor. As a junior, Ware was among 20 finalists for the award.
Ware arrived at LBSU in head coach Dan Monson’s first recruiting class. In his time at The Beach, Ware has seen statistical improvements each year. As a freshman, Ware averaged 9.1 points, 4.1 assists while shooting 41.2 percent from the field.
In his sophomore year, Ware upped his scoring average to 11.9 per game, while dishing out 4.8 assists per game and grabbing 2.1 steals per contest.
Ware’s junior season was his best to date. He averaged 17.2 points and 4.4 assists while shooting 42.2 percent from the field. That same season, he became the first player in Big West Conference history to be named both Big West Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
This season has been more of the same for Ware. Through nine games, he is averaging 18.3 points and 4.2 assists per game, while shooting 41.7 percent from the field.
But, this isn’t the only award that the LBSU floor general has been nominated for this season. Ware was named to the Wooden Award Top 50 watch list, preseason Mid–Major All–American team and the National Association of Basketball Coaches All–District 9 team among others.
The 20 finalists will be announced by Jan. 1. The list will then be narrowed to 10 by Feb. 1, while the top five will be decided by March 1. The winner of the award will be honored in New Orleans on Championship Monday as a part of the NCAA Final Four weekend.
