Monson named District 9 Coach of the Year

Long Beach State men’s basketball teams head coach Dan Monson was named Division I District 9 Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

The award, which is voted on by The National Association of Basketball Coaches, was given to the 49ers coach for the second straight season. Monson was one of 24 coaches in Division I college basketball to receive the award. He was also named the Big West Conference Coach of the Year.

Monson led the ‘Niners to a 25-9 overall record this season, including a 15-1 mark in Big West play. He guided LBSU to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007, a game they eventually lost to the University of New Mexico.

Monson became the first Long Beach State coach to win back-to-back regular season championships in 35 years. He is also the first ‘Niners head coach to win at least 20 games in consecutive seasons in 38 years.

The fifth-year coach navigated his squad through the toughest non-conference schedule in the country, which included games against North Carolina, Kansas, Pittsburgh, Kansas State, Xavier, San Diego State and Louisville.
