LBSU to face Big West’s 8th- and 9th-place teams

The end to the women’s volleyball season is coming to a close, as the 49ers will take their last three road matches within the next two weeks, with two this weekend against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.

During their last meeting against the Highlanders (1-22, 0-11 Big West Conference), the 49ers swept them in three sets. Long Beach State won the last set by 17 points, the most any Big West team has won by this year.

The Highlanders’ season might just be the worst any team can endure, losing every match against every team in conference. They have been swept by every Big West team in three sets except for one, in which they lost in four.

It may be a shock to learn of such an unsuccessful season, but it can be taken into consideration that their star player, Christina Maietta, is a 5-foot-11 freshman, while most teams’ scorers stand taller than six feet. Maietta has accumulated 191 kills for the Highlanders.

The last meeting against the Titans (10-13, 3-8 Big West) was an exciting one, as they barely fell to the 49ers in five sets, losing by two points in the fifth.

The Titans lost six straight matches until their last meeting against the Highlanders and are eighth in Big West standings.

Bre Moreland leads CSUF with 233 kills and 286 digs while Alyse Hensley has 260 kills and 264 digs. McKenna Painton has 317 digs and leads the Big West in digs per set.

The 49ers (13-11, 6-5 Big West) will be going into this weekend’s games coming off of a heartbreaking five-set loss against first-place Cal State Northridge.

The 49ers will play against the Highlanders on Friday at the SRC Arena at 7 p.m. and against the Titans on Saturday at the Titan Gym at 7:30 p.m.
