Rain forces LBSU softball team to miss weekend games at home tournament

Nasty winds and thunder storms forced the cancellation of three Long Beach State softball games, including two against top ten opponents.

The 49ers (11-6) started the tournament strong, sweeping a Thursday double-header against Nevada (10-7) and Utah Valley (0-13).

While the 49ers’ offense continued its hot streak, it was the starting pitching that dominated over the games. Pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley pitched a complete game shutout against the Wolf Pack, striking out five while only giving up three hits in a 4-0 victory.

The scoreless streak would continue later that day, with Amanda Hansen tossing six shutout innings in an 8-0 win.

The offense continued to be a model of consistency, scoring 12 runs in two games. DH Karli Sandoval went 3-4 against Utah Valley, and Ashlynn Booker added a long home run. Shortstop Shayna Kimbrough had multiple hits in both games.

The 49ers welcomed back players from injury over the weekend. Center fielder Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi had missed four out of the last five games due to a concussion sustained during practice.

“She got a little bit of whiplash when she landed on the grass and had a headache,” head coach Kim Sowder said.
“That’s a sign of a concussion and you’re automatically out. If you test for a concussion you have to be symptom-free for 24 hours,” Sowder said.

Utility player Loni Tyler also came back from being cleared for a concussion of her own. She pinch-ran and scored in both games.

Along with games against No. 4 Michigan (13-2) and No. 5 UCLA (16-0), the Sunday finale against Illinois (11-3) also had to be cancelled due to unplayable conditions.

The 49ers will now prepare for the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton. Before they leave, however, they’ll play one game at home against Lehigh (0-5).
