Summer Staycation: A Guide to Day Tripping

Summer is upon us at last. Many people are packing their bags and embarking on long awaited trips, but not everyone is able to explore and travel this summer. That doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun, as there are many ways to enjoy Southern California on a budget. After all a vacation or staycation is what you make it.

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens

The Pasadena library exhibits a variety of activities such as enjoying a multitude of artwork featuring both European and American collections. In addition, there are over 10 gardens available including a rose garden, Japanese garden and a jungle garden. Admission is usually $20 for adults, but the first Thursday of each month is free with advance tickets from the library’s
website.

Movies in the Park

Nothing says summer quite like a movie in the park. There is a range of flicks being shown at a variety of parks throughout Los Angeles. Movies are being screened nearly every day, from kid friendly films to slightly more edgy features. For a full list of locations and cinema, visit: www.thrillist.com

The Getty Center

For those who have never been, this museum is a must see. There is a vast collection of permanent artwork and temporary exhibits. This summer, Ansel Adams’ photography will be on display throughout July. The architecture of the museum’s buildings are works of art, complete with breathtaking views of Los Angeles. There are also gardens available for picnicking. The museum is free, but parking is $15 for the day.

Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Los Angeles. There are many restaurants, shops and, of course, the ferris wheel. During the summer, the pier puts on numerous events including Saturday morning Roga, which incorporates running and yoga, and the Twilight Concerts that are free concerts each Thursday night. Griffith Observatory

The Observatory is a unique way to spend the day. It is an astronomy museum and it includes displays of the sky, planets and astronomical findings. Telescopes and observation terraces are located throughout the Observatory for observational purposes. There are also Planetarium shows available that give an up close and personal tour of the galaxy. Admission to the
Observatory is free, but shows are $5 with a student I.D.

Baseball Games

Whether you are a Dodger fan or an Angels fan, a day at the ballpark is a blast. The energy of the crowd singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” combined with hotdogs and frozen lemonade instills the spirit of summer. When tickets are purchased in advance, tickets can be as low as $9 each.

Huntington Beach Street Fair

Each Tuesday night Huntington Beach celebrates Surf City Nights from 5-9 p.m. The event includes a street fair and farmers market with local vendors and street performers. The fair is located on Main Street between PCH and Orange. Admission is free, but you may want to bring a few bucks for produce or snacks.

Aquarium of the Pacific

Many people who live in Long Beach have yet to visit the aquarium. The underwater exhibit gives insight to ocean exploration and sea life habitats. There are a variety of events taking place including guest speakers and the Pacific Islander festival. While the aquarium is usually on the expensive side, a summer late nights special allows guests admission for $14.95 after 5 p.m.

Leo Carrillo State Beach Camping

While this may be a bit of a drive up the PCH to Malibu it is completely worth the trip. There are camping sites available with picnic tables and fire pits for evening bonfires. Each site is within walking distance to the beach. You can have up to three vehicles and eight people per campsite and it is only $45 per night. This is a frugal getaway for a group of friends.

Malibu Creek State Park

Again, this is a bit of a trek outside of Long Beach, but there is much to offer. Activities include hiking, biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, bird watching, painting and camping. There are free guided hikes if you really want to get to know your surroundings. Bring a blanket and a packed lunch, and you could easily find a place to picnic and enjoy the sun. The park also has access to the beach if you choose to cool off after a hike or enjoy the sunset at the end of the day. It is only $12 to park for the day.
