What are you packing?

Whether it’s a plain two-strapped backpack or an eco-friendly tote bag, students at Cal State University Long Beach wear their packs not only for their inherent function of carrying books, binders and laptops – but also for style and fashion points.

The Daily 49er talked to students to find out what they’re packing around The Beach.

Jansport Backpacks

This accessory makes up the core of the campus attire, and Jansport backpacks are classic.

Anissa Figeuroa, a junior communications major said she wears them because they are plain and cheap.

“I can wear my black Jansport with any color clothing,” Figeuroa said. “Other backpacks have all these unnecessary compartments too. Jansport has the perfect spots for books and my laptop.”

Kaleb Pritchett, a junior geography major also prefers Jansport for their simplicity.

“I don’t like flashy backpacks,” Kaleb said. “My Jansport is durable too; I’ve had this same pack for like… six years.”

Herschel Supply Co.

Some students at CSULB said that these are the best backpacks they’ve ever had the “pleasure” of wearing.

“I’m not a very good looking guy, but this pack makes me look 10 times better; plus I look like a certified hipster,” Ryan Ortolf, a junior engineering major said.

Lauren Glasgow, a senior psychology major said she wears her army green colored Herschel backpack for it’s stylish and simple look.

Shopping bags: Canvas Tote Bags

As a result of our generations attempt to “going green,” tote bags are not only used at local supermarkets, but also have gained popularity on campus.

“I bought my tote bag at the University Bookstore,” said Maryann Chavez, senior human development major. “They’re sleek and easy to grab-and-go.”

Gym Sacks

Most students wearing sportswear strap comfy, lightweight gym sacks on their backs.

Junior communication major and member of CSULB’s Rugby team, Roland Blackiston, uses his Nike gym bag for books on his off-days and for his workout clothes during practice days.

Oversized Purses

Fashionistas too cool for backpacks use over-sized purses to hold their belongings.

“Sometimes I just don’t think that a backpack will compliment with my outfit,” Tess Lustbaum, a senior anthropology major, said. “But with a big purse I can fit my books and notebooks without having to wear a bulky backpack.”
