Falling tree injures student

A Cal State Long Beach student got “very, very lucky” yesterday after a fallen tree by Parking Lot 4 fell and branches knocked her to the ground, according to University Police.

“It was a gigantic tree,” said University Police Lt. Scot Willey.

The student suffered a minor laceration to her ankle and complained of a headache when the tree’s branches knocked her down as she passed by. No one else was injured.

As a precautionary measure, a neck brace was put on the student and she was taken to the hospital of her choice, Willey said. He said University Police doesn’t think the tree hit her head, but that she probably hit her head when she fell.

According to Toni Beron, associated vice president for University Relations, three university vehicles were also damaged. These included a community service officer van and a 49er Shops Inc. vehicle.

Willey said one vehicle was directly hit by the tree, which broke at its base. He said Facilities Management is still investigating why the tree fell.
